Excerpt from the book:
"You must understand what's happened, Reverend," said Henry softly. The mandrake, a love potion - an aphrodisiac used to seduce Isabel; to entwine her into your father's worship, to create a soul worthy of sacrifice - a symbol of his servitude to the unholy. We all have symbols Reverend and belief in what they represent, no matter how strange they appear. You yourself believe so much in the reality of Christ that you wanted to do his work. You saw so much suffering that you wanted to be as him and take the suffering of children unto yourself. That is the power of the symbol Reverend - the Crucifixion, a reminder of His work, or even the window - without - Adam created as a symbol of persecution for defying obedience of your father. Isabel created her own crucifix, as a symbol of death to the unholy allegiance she had made with your father's seduction, and a wish to return to the Christian fold. The spirits are responsive to the symbols of the living, Reverend, but bad spirits can anger. Isabel was willing to risk and paid the ultimate price - her own life."
